"Schools and early years establishments can reduce their impact upon the environment by changing the way they feed their children"

"What we eat contributes around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for almost 60% of global biodiversity loss"

We know that food production is a major driver of mass wildlife extinction and deforestation. We also know sadly that the vast majority of schools and early years' establishments have menus, which are directly contributing towards the climate crisis...why? Because the typical school and nursery menu is planned around meat and dairy as dietary essentials for children.
To save the planet, educational establishments and childcare settings need to think differently about the way they feed their children; changing their daily meat and dairy centric menus into healthier and more sustainable plant-based one. What we eat, contributes around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions and is responsible for almost 60% of global biodiversity loss. Farming animals for meat and dairy requires space and huge inputs of water and feed. Today, one of the biggest causes of forest loss is the expansion of agricultural land for animal feed production, such as soy. And producing meat creates vastly more carbon dioxide than plants such as vegetables, grains and legumes. |
